Real Estate - “It’s Real”
File them under Stereogum/Pitchfork-approved “Bands To Watch”. Twee, indie-pop with smirk-inducing “Whoa, oh oh ohhhh!” choruses.
Also file under “Annoyingly Literal, Inconspicuously Named Bands That Are Almost Impossible To Google Without The +Band/Music Suffix”.
OK Go - “All Is Not Lost”
Almost by reflex, I’ve tended to overlook anything new by OK Go. They sell themselves as a sub-par band that compensates for mediocrity through sensationalized razmatazz. But you know how it is - the intrigue of adult men in body-hugging one-piece suits trying to teabag you through the screen tends to pique the curiosity.
I do have to admit that the bit where they start spelling out words was quite impressive, although, I did hold my breath for a while cos I was worried it’d start verging into Human Centipede territory.
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes - “Janglin”, “Home” and “40 Day Daydream”
There’s that saying about not judging the credibility of an artiste based on the album cover. Same would apply to a band of hipster-hobo folksters with a frontman that looks like a dirtier, drug-gier Russell Brand.
But I’ve been wrong on many occasions and glad that I ended up giving them a go. Sounds like: a 10-piece hipster hobo version of Broken Social Scene and the kind of music that might emanate from the Iron & Wine frontman’s beard.
Feist - “My Moon My Man” (Acoustic version)
Was never big on the original version but totally digging this version: homely, familiar yet uncomfortably sombre.
The Darkness - “I Believe In A Thing Called Love”
